David M. Grant

Professor Grant was born and educated in Utah, with degrees from the University of Utah. He joined the chemistry faculty in 1958 after holding a faculty position at the University of Illinois. He is credited as being "an outstanding teacher with a warm and effective, yet challenging, style of lecturing which has made him a favorite throughout the world. Student reports have placed him very near the top of the science college faculty, yet his standards are rigorous as any …" His teaching has included freshman general chemistry, upper division physical chemistry and advanced level graduate courses; he has directed the thesis research of over 40 M.S. and Ph.D. students.

 

Professor Grant served as the Department of Chemistry chairperson and as dean of the College of Science. In his present position he directs the campus-wide computer program. His research interests encompass nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and have led to almost 300 research publications. He is best known for his pioneering work in the field of carbon-13 NMR methods and theory, and is widely sought as an invited lecturer. His research work has been recognized in a variety of ways including the university's Distinguished Research Award; the Gardner Prize and the Distinguished Service Award of the Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters; the California Section Gold Medal and the Utah Section Award of the American Chemical Society, and the National ACS Award in Petroleum Chemistry.
